Inchanga-born boxer Sanele Msimang feels right at home with Sizwe Mthembu being his trainer as he’s preparing for his fight against Luvuyo Mputi from the Eastern Cape.
Msimang clashes with Mputi in a vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) International junior-welterweight title fight at the APN Portuguese Hall in Durban on Saturday, 5 August.
“I have nothing to complain about in my preparations for the fight. My trainer has known me for a very long time now. He was there with my uncle when I fought six times in one year. That was before I moved to Gqeberha,” Msimang said.
After he was stopped in the fourth round by former champion Tshifhiwa Munyai when he challenged for the South African lightweight title in October 2021, Msimang left Caiphus Ntante’s Caiph Camp in Gqeberha and returned to Durban to train under Mthembu.
And the 32-year-old Msimang has had one fight since then, a split decision victory over Sibonelo Ndzimande at the Greyville Convention Centre in Durban in September last year.
Meanwhile, Mputi is the current Eastern Cape junior-welterweight champion and is rated fifth in South Africa.
