Mexican boxer Bryan Mercado Vazquez handed South African opponent Mzuvukile ‘Old Bones’ Magwaza his first stoppage loss when they fought for the World Boxing Council (WBC) International junior-featherweight title at Domo de La Feria in Fresnillo, Mexico, on Saturday morning (South African time).
Vazquez went straight to Magwaza from the first gong catching him with some nice blows, which forced the Duncan Village-born boxer to fight from the back foot.
And Magwaza, a former World Boxing Federation (WBF) bantamweight champion, lost by a seventh round stoppage after the ringside doctor ended the fight because of bad cut around the South African’s left eye.
Magwaza was fighting for the fourth time since he made a return after he was shot in the leg during a robbery at his home in Site C, Khayelitsha, early in 2018.
As a result of the loss, Magwaza has now dropped to 22 victories (13 knockouts), two losses and three draws, while Vazquez improved his record to 27 wins (22 stoppages) and a defeat.
