History will be made when South African boxer and reigning International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-flyweight champion Sivenathi ‘Special One’ Nontshinga fights in a unification bout in just over two months’ time.
Nontshinga is scheduled to clash against Puerto Rican and World Boxing Organisation (WBO) junior-flyweight titlist Jonathan ‘Bomba’ Gonzalez on Saturday, 15 June (Sunday, 16 June, South African time) in Puerto Rico.
Initially, the 25-year-old Nontshinga from the Eastern Cape was due for a mandatory defence against Filipino boxer Christian Araneta.
“Remember, according to the IBF rules, a unification supersedes a mandatory defence,” Nontshinga’s trainer Colin ‘Nomakanjani’ Nathan told Ink Sport.
The 32-year-old Gonzalez is fresh from a unanimous decision victory over his compatriot Rene Santiago in San Juan, Puerto Rico, last month while Nontshinga stopped Mexican boxer Adrian Curiel Dominguez in the 10th round in Oaxaca, Mexico, in February.
