With only five fights in the paid ranks, Duncan Village-born boxer Lwando Mgabi gets a chance to have a belt wrapped around his waist as he clashes with Gift Pilane in two weeks’ time.
Mgabi from the 9th South African Infantry (SAI) Boxing Club in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, faces Pilane in a vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) Africa junior-bantamweight title contest at the Vibrant Boxing Academy in Ottery on Friday, 19 April.
“Initially, this fight was set for the 12th. It then got postponed for a week, no problem for me because I have been training very hard,” Mgabi said.
“I know that Pilane is more experienced than me, but that won’t be a problem as this is going to be an easy fight for me. He’s short and I’m going to use my reach during the fight.”
On what he plans to do should he win the fight, Mgabi said: “I want to challenge for the SA title after this fight irrespective of whether Phumelela Cafu is still the champion or not.”
The unbeaten Mgabi will be returning to action for the first time since his win over Goitsemodimo Pooe at the Goodwood Prison, Cape Town, in October last year. On the other hand, Pilane stopped Musa Ntlangula in the second during their fight in Bloemfontein last December.
