Bloemfontein Celtic captain Mandla Mabena was relieved after his team earned three points following their 2-1 win over Chippa United in a DStv Premiership match at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane, East London, on Tuesday.
Mabena, who walked away with the man-of-the-match award, scored Celtic’s winning goal after Neo Maema had equalised following the Chilli Boys’ lead courtesy of Mduduzi Sibeko’s goal.
“It was more of a six-pointer for us. We had been struggling to get to 30 points, but by God’s grace we got the three points we needed,” Mabena said.
“We will take one game at a time. We know we have two ‘cup finals’ to play again. It’s not easy down there, but we are happy. It was a team effort. Coming back from trailing 1-0, we didn’t give up. We showed character and I’m happy with the team’s performance.”
Before making their way to Mdantsane, Phunya Sele Sele were struggling to win away from home. Celtic have 31 points from 28 matches.
“It’s been long time since we got a win away. I think we just have to thank God that we didn’t give up and He didn’t give up on us,” the former Platinum Stars and Orlando Pirates forward said.
Celtic are left with two matches – against Mamelodi Sundowns and Black Leopards – before they wrap up the season.
