Boxing South Africa (BSA) has sent its condolences to the family of the late former boxer Phumzile ‘Gamala’ Dubase, who passed away early on Sunday morning.

The former junior-welterweight boxer and boxing enthusiast passed away after he lost a two-year battle against cancer. He was 56.

“Boxing SA would like to convey a message of condolence to the Dubase Family. Boxing SA has learnt with shock the passing of former junior-welterweight boxer, Phumzile Dubase, who passed away at home in Mdantsane on Sunday, 18 August 2024,” a BSA statement said on Monday.

Dubase joined the professional ranks in 1986 and spent eight years as a paid boxer. He won nine fights with five of those wins coming from stoppages, lost 10 and drew twice.

After retiring as a professional boxer, Dubase concentrated on working for the Department of Health as a paramedic.
