Fights are now coming thick and fast for Ayabonga ‘Jay Jay’ Sonjica as he will be fighting for the third time in four months after being inactive for more than two years.

The lad from Duncan Village in East London has a date with Komani-born Sabelo Ngebiyane. The two former South African champions from the Eastern Cape will trade leather in Johannesburg on Friday, 18 July.

“The fight against Sabelo is on. It’s going to take place on the 18th of July under Aquila Boxing Promotions,” confirmed Sonjica’s trainer Sean Smith.

Sonjica, an erstwhile SA junior-featherweight champion, will go to the Ngebiyane fight on the back of two wins over Thato Bonokoane in March and Sanele Maduna earlier this month.

“Jay Jay has had two good fights. The first fight wasn’t bad, the last one was also not bad either. Sabelo is a good fighter. These are the fights for a sturdy come back,” Smith said.

On the other hand, Ngebiyane, a former SA junior-bantamweight title holder, lost on points to Western Cape provincial champion Kaya Mlata in Cape Town last month.

Sonjica, the 2012 Olympian, will celebrate his 34th birthday later next month and is 10th while Ngebiyane is ninth in the Boxing South Africa (BSA) ratings. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
