South African boxing is mourning following the passing away of Eastern Cape female flyweight boxer Thapelo Bokwe on Monday.

Bokwe passed away at a KwaNojoli hospital after she was admitted on Saturday last week. She was rushed to hospital after complaining about a severe headache.

As recent as last week, her trainer Siyabulela ‘Baba’ Makala voiced his concern as Bokwe had been removed from the ratings. Makala felt that the ratings committee was unfair to his boxer, who last fought when she lost to Nomfundo Xaba in April this year.

Bokwe, who had two wins and two losses, suffered defeats to Okuhle Mthi in October 2023 in Gqeberha and against Xaba at the Scenery Park Hall, East London, in her last two fights.
