It’s going to be history for Golden Gloves as the promotional outfit will stage four bouts featuring female boxers in one tournament on Saturday next week.

And it’s quite easy to understand why Golden Gloves managing director Rodney Berman is happy with his promotional outfit breaking new ground.

Topping the female bouts at the Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, will be an International Boxing Organisation (IBO) All-Africa junior-featherweight contest between Caleigh Swart and Simamkele Tutsheni.

Both fighters are based in Cape Town and carry unbeaten records. And this is one fight the Western Cape boxing community didn’t want to happen, however, it’s happening in Gauteng.

“This is a first for Golden Gloves and it’s happening on Woman’s Day. The fight between the two Western Cape boxers promises to be an exciting affair,” Berman said.

The veteran promoter once promoted Laila Ali’s fight against Gwendolyn O’Neill at the Emperors Palace in February 2007.

“I promoted Laila Ali’s fight as well as that of the daughter of Roberto Duran,” Berman said.

Tyla Promnick, meanwhile, will look to stretch her unbeaten record as she’s going to come up against Noxolo Magagula with Lee Ann Jansen van Vuuren facing Sibulele Soboois while Saarah Karriem will be trading blows with Samkelo Mbambo.

And this is the same tournament where Ricardo Malajika will be making the third defence of his IBO junior-bantamweight crown against Filipino boxer Jayson Mama in the main bout.
