A fight between two knockout specialists, Siseko Teyisi and Elmar Zamora from the Philippines, is, according to the International Boxing Federation (IBF) website, going ahead later this month.
This is despite Teyisi being due for a South African junior-flyweight title mandatory defence against challenger Athenkosi Thongwana, who is the number one contender.
Thongwana’s trainer Lonwabo Witbooi said earlier this week: “They have two choices, defend against Thongwana or vacate the title. I’m not going to allow Thongwana’s rights to be violated simply because they want to push Teyisi ahead. Teyisi must fulfil his mandatory obligation and defend against Thongwana. It’s simply as that.”
IBF Africa representative Andre de Vries has, however, told Ink Sport that he has not heard anything from the New Jersey-based organisation.
“I have written to the IBF seeking clarity about the fight. So far, I have not received anything from the IBF regarding this fight,” De Vries.
Scheduled fights that are appearing in the IBF website list the vacant intercontinental junior-flyweight title fight as slated for Sunday, 28 September.
Mdantsane-born Teyisi is on a roll having won all his seven fights with six of those victories coming from knockouts.
On the other hand, Zamora is a formidable opponent who’s unbeaten in 10 fights. The 26-year-old Zamora has stopped eight of his victims. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
