The disappointment of having his vacant South African junior-welterweight title fight against Aphiwe Boyiya being postponed numerous times before he decided that he couldn’t take it anymore has not dampened Sibusiso Zingange’s spirit.

Instead, the postponements and fight cancellation have given Zingange more strength, especially now that he’s preparing for his clash against Malawian boxer Hannock Phiri late next month. Zingange will trade blows with Phiri in an African Boxing Union (ABU) junior-welterweight title strap at the Silver Lakes Farm in Pretoria on Saturday, 28 February.

“I’m very happy that I will fight after what happened last year. It’s been a long time since I last fought. I have no doubt in my mind that I’m going to win this fight,” a confident Zingange remarked.

This is going to be the first time that the former SA junior-lightweight champion fights since his points win over Talent Baloyi at the Galleria in Sandton, Johannesburg, in March last year. Zingange was due to have fought against Boyiya, but the fight kept on getting postponed since last July.

Meanwhile, it’s going to be the second time that Phiri fights in South Africa having lost to Gift Bolo at the Galleria in June 2022. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
