Azinga ‘Golden Boy’ Fuzile’s seriousness about his upcoming fight against Asanda ‘Dynamite’ Gingqi is shown by the decision to stick with the triumvirate of top trainer Andile Mofu as well as the Tete siblings Makazole and his younger brother Zolani.
Duncan Village-born Fuzile, a former world title contender, is scheduled to face Gingqi in a bout, which has already divided the KuGompo City boxing fraternity. This fight is set for the Orient Theatre on Friday, 24 April.
In an effort to make sure that Fuzile is ready for the slugfest, his manger Mlandeli Tengimfene has revived his stable’s relationship with the High Performance Centre (HPC) at the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) in Gqeberha.
After Fuzile’s fitness levels were assessed at NMU on Wednesday, Tengimfene said: “This partnership started way back when we used to bring Zolani down to them for the same exercise in 2017.
“Remember, Zolani would just train for the world title and being assessed whether we were over or under training him. The NMU has this High Performance Centre that gave us answers to the scientific side of the the Human Science Movement. We got the answers there and Zolani’s stay at that level and sustained it was because of our partnership. Azinga is at that level and we have resuscitated that again as we are getting ready for this most important fight for him.”
Mdantsane-born Gingqi’s South African junior-lightweight title is not going to be at stake when he fights against the former national featherweight champion.
Meanwhile, Tengimfene has consistently declined to reveal the names of the boxers who are helping the former 28-year-old former champion in sparring sessions.
Tengimfene, thhe 2017 BSA Manager of the Year award recipient, said: “Azinga’s sparring partners will remain a secret and we cannot divulge their names.” – Monwabisi Jimlongo
