It’s a matter of 12 rounds, if the fight goes the distance, for Siyakholwa Kuse to write his name into world boxing history books as he squares up against Filipino opponent Melvin Jerusalem on Saturday evening.
Kuse from Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape will get a second bite at Jerusalem’s World Boxing Council (WBC) minimumweight title when they clash at the Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni. Jerusalem defeated Kuse via a unanimous decision in Manila in the Philippines in October last year.
“There’s only One Way. We need to win this fight. Siya Kuse is ready and focused. He is going to be crowned the new champion,” Kuse’s trainer Manny Fernandes said on Friday.
With Eastern Cape boxers, past and present, having won world titles in different boxing bodies, only the WBC crown has eluded the province. And a win will make Kuse the first Eastern Cape pugilist to rule the world under the WBC. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
