Orlando Pirates were crowned the new Betway Premiership champions after a 14-year wait as they beat relegated Orbit College 2-0 at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit on Saturday afternoon.
Needing full points to dethrone Mamelodi Sundowns, the Buccaneers won the all-important match courtesy of two own goals by Sabelo Nkomo and Ndumiso Ngiba to give their first league title in more than a decade.
Pirates ended the season with 69 points from 30 matches. They were just a point ahead of second placed Sundowns, who had the league title in the previous eight seasons.
Meanwhile, a goal scored in the 33rd minute by Sammy Seabi was enough to give Chippa United a 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs at the FNB Stadium in Nasrec, Johannesburg.
