As he’s counting weeks before flying to Lagos, Nigeria, former South African champion Ayabonga ‘JayJay’ Sonjica is not concerned about his Nigerian opponent’s unbeaten record.
Sonjica is scheduled to leave South Africa for Nigeria on Tuesday, 28 July, just a few days before he fights against unbeaten Nigerian boxer Taiwa Agbaje. The Duncan Village-born Sonjica faces Agbaje in a 10 rounds bout at the Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos, on Friday, 31 July.
“We are going to Nigeria and we will see what he has as we are not worried about his record. It’s not an easy fight, that I can tell you. We will leave for Nigeria on the 28th of this month,” the 35-year-old Sonjica said.
This fight is going to pit two knockout specialists as Sonjica, an erstwhile SA junior-featherweight titlist, has stopped 10 of his 14 victims and lost once while Agbaje has registered 13 knockouts in 18 wins.
Having fought four times last year after he had been inactive for almost three years, it’s going to be Sonjica’s first fight since his unanimous points win over Rofhiwa Nemushungwa in November.
On the other hand, the 34-year-old Agbaje, who is a southpaw, last fought when he registered a second round over Tanzanian opponent Idrisa Makorani in October. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
