Outgoing Boxing South Africa (BSA) director of operations Cindy Nkomo has revealed that women continue to be treated differently compared to men in the work place.
Nkomo, who resigned both as acting BSA chief executive officer and director of operations recently, has insisted that she wants to be judged as an administrator, not as a woman.
“There are the things that we as women tend to experience generally in our work place. It’s even more difficult when you are in a male-dominated work place,” Nkomo said on SAfm’s Sport On show on Wednesday evening.
“For me, I have never looked at administration of boxing as a woman. I did not apply for a director of operations and it was not advertised in a specific gender. My own stance has always been that l’m a professional administrator.”
Asked about whether there was a time when she felt that her authority was being undermined, Nkomo said: “Certainly, this didn’t only happen with boxing. Over time I managed to stand my own ground. It is sad that in this day and age, in 2021, we are still talking about whether you are female or not. When l came in there were many gaps. What have males done for this organisation?”
Meanwhile, Nkomo admitted that her resignation from BSA was sudden even though she denied that she was pushed.
“Yes, it is sudden in terms of the announcement. However, l had actually indicated my desire to step down. It was not a new decision,” she said.
