Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams understands how important this week is as the South African senior men’s national team have two crucial 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers between Thursday and Sunday.
Bafana Bafana face neighbours Zimbabwe at the FNB Stadium in Nasrec, Johannesburg, on Thursday and Ghana away in Cape Coast three days later. Both qualifiers are going to start at 21h00.
“Big week for us. We know what’s at stake. Massive games coming up, the guys are looking relaxed,” William said.
“Obviously, the mood in the camp is one of excitement. We are a bit sad that we lost some of our players, (Mothobi) Mvala, (Sifiso) Hlanti and Yusuf Maart. We wish them a speedy recovery.”
The Gqeberha-born skipper is quite aware of the important task ahead as nothing less than a victory would be good for them.
“Coming to the games, we know what to do. We’ve faced these teams before, but it’s different circumstances now,” Williams remarked.
“You’ve seen two different types of Bafana Bafana, one that can play good football and get a result, one that can grind out results. Whatever we are doing we need to believe it’s working and continue doing that.”
Bafana Bafana top Group G with 10 points after winning three matches and drawing once. They need positive results from both games if they want to go to the final round of qualifiers, especially with Ghana being on nine points after four games.
All the teams that will finish on top of each of the 10 groups will go to the final round of qualifiers to make sure that Africa produces five teams for next year’s World Cup finals.
