Olympian Ayabonga ‘Jay Jay’ Sonjica was surprisingly not overly concerned when he was not getting fights after winning the South African junior-featherweight title.
Sonjica from Duncan Village finally gets a chance to showcase his boxing skills once again as he faces Tanzanian Kasimu Hamad Haji in an International Boxing Federation (IBF) Africa junior-featherweight title fight at the Orient Theatre in East London on Sunday.
And Sonjica has admitted that the 24-year-old boxer from Dar-Es-Salaam is a closed book to him.
“I would be lying if I can say I know this guy. However, that is not going to be a problem because my coach and management team have come up with a fight strategy,” Sonjica said.
The 30-year-old Sonjica, who is based in Johannesburg, insisted that his fight preparations are the same regardless of who he’s going to face.
“Truth be told, it’s not easy to prepare for a fight. I mean all preparations are difficult because anything is possible in a fight situation. Fitness is key. This is how I approach my fights,” Sonjica remarked.
“That I have not fought for some time is not a problem. I have been training all along despite not getting fights. I’m ready for this fight.”
Sonjica last fought when he beat Innocent Mantengu to win the SA junior-featherweight title at the Orient Theatre in September 2019.
