Sharadene Fortuin retained her South African female bantamweight title following a split decision win over former champion Melissa Miller at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban on Saturday evening.
Judges Sipho Zondo and Bulelwa Mthembu scored the fight 96-94 and 98-93 respectively for Fortuin while Eric Khoza had Miller winning on 96-95.
This was the second time that Fortuin from Seymour in the Eastern Cape and Miller fought this year. Fortuin dethroned Miller in Johannesburg in August.
But the August fight went on review after Miller’s handlers protested saying their boxer had been robbed. A review declared that Miller from Eldorado Park had indeed been ‘robbed’ of her title.
Fortuin, who has not lost a fight since her defeat to Bukiwe Nonina in September 2013, has now beaten Miller three times. Miller has not won a fight since she defeated Thema Zuma in March 2019.
