Former South African junior-bantamweight champion Sabelo Ngebiyana is counting losses after a positive COVID-19 test hit him hard in the pocket.
Ngebiyana’s fight against Ricardo Malajika, which was scheduled for the Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park last Saturday, was cancelled after both boxers tested positive for COVID-19. Ngebiyana’s trainer Bruno Pereira also tested positive for COVID-19.
“Of course, this has affected me financially. But my health is important now. I feel better and I’m gonna be okay,” Ngebiyana said.
COVID-19 has messed up Komani-born Ngebiyana’s life as he’s not going to fight against United States-based Russian boxer Nikolai Potapov anymore. They were due to fight at Shamir Petrossian’s Shamo Boxing tournament at the USC Soviet Wings in Moscow, Russia, on Sunday, 19 December.
This would have been Ngebiyana’s second visit to Russia this year. He lost to Armenian Narek Abgaryan in Russia in August.
