There’s no festive break for world title hopeful Thabiso ‘The Rock’ Mchunu as he is preparing for his fight against Ilunga Makabu in the new year.

Mchunu challenges World Boxing Council (WBC) cruiserweight champion Makabu at the Packard Music Hall in Warren, Ohio, in the United States, on Saturday, 29 January (Sunday, 30 January, South African time).

With the Joe Biden regime having banned travelling to and from South Africa, Mchunu’s trainer Sean Smith has revealed that they are going to leave for Mexico on Saturday, 8 January. They will quarantine in Mexico for 14 days before proceeding to Ohio.

This is going to be a repeat of the May 2015 fight, which 34-year-old Makabu from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) won by a stoppage.

The 33-year-old Mchunu won the WBC Silver cruiserweight title when he outpointed Russian Evgeny Tishchenko in Russia in March.

On the other hand, Makabu successfully made the first defence of his title when he stopped United States-based Nigerian boxer Olanrewaju Durodola in his native DRC last December.
