AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy and his SuperSport United counterpart Kaitano Tembo believe that their teams played well during Usuthu’s 1-0 win over Matsatsantsa a Pitori in a DStv Premiership fixture played at King’s Park in Durban on Tuesday.
Veteran striker Siphelele Mthembu’s goal, which he scored in the 24th minute, made the difference between the two teams.
“The players always work hard. They give me everything they have. I have to be very, very appreciative of that and I think the game overall was perfect,” McCarthy said.
“We executed the game to perfection. We dominated the midfield. We know they have good midfielders with the two youngsters (Sipho) Mbule and (Teboho) Mokoena, the future Bafana Bafana stars. We kept on getting balls behind their midfielders.”
Even though he’s happy with his team’s performance, McCarthy is unhappy with the manner in which his players missed chances during the match.
“My only criticism of the performance is that we didn’t score more than one goal. I think if we had scored two or three of the chances we created we could have enjoyed the game. I’m delighted with the three points. The players keep getting better and better,” the former Cape Town City coach said.
Tembo, on the other hand, said: “Besides the mistake that resulted into their goal I thought we were the better team throughout the game even though some decisions didn’t go our way. We played very well, we dominated possession, but we couldn’t put the ball into the back of the net. I can’t fault the guys. I thought they played very well.”
