Mamelodi Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe is the last man standing for the presidency of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following the latest withdrawal of Ahmed Yahya from Mauritania.
Yahya’s withdrawal from the presidential race comes after Ivorian Jacques Anouma and Augustin Senghor from Senegal withdrew and backed Motsepe for the CAF presidency.
“I would like to announce the decision I have taken in agreement with my fellow candidates for the Confederation of African Football presidency, after frank and fruitful discussions where we took a decision to unify the list of candidates for the CAF presidency, and this by personally withdrawing my candidacy and that of my brothers and colleagues Augustin Senghor and Jacques Anouma,” a statement from Yahya said.
“I will continue to work hard so that African football is respected in the world for what it is: one of the most beautiful hopes of our beloved continent.”
Motsepe, who is now the sole candidate, is going to be installed as CAF president in Rabat, Morocco, on Friday.
