A 5-1 annihilation of his former team Cape Town City by his club AmaZulu on Wednesday left Benni McCarthy a very proud man.
The Usuthu coach was smiling from ear to ear after watching his team demolish the Citizens at the Cape Town Stadium to move to one point behind log-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who were held to a goalless draw by Lamontville Golden Arrows. Usuthu have 47 points after winning 13 games, drawing eight and losing four.
“Huge respect and a lot of love for my players. To go and do that to one of the best footballing teams in the country. You know Cape Town City, they are a fabulous team, a good footballing team that scores a lot of goals. We made them look average,” McCarthy said.
“These boys don’t know what they are achieving. They are on the brink of making history. First AmaZulu team to go so many games unbeaten. I’m super proud of this team and I really can’t wait to see what we can achieve with this team.”
The rampant Usuthu are left with five matches before they wrap up the 2020/21 season.
“I hope we keep our focus. Just because we won doesn’t mean we have achieved anything. I’m proud of each an every player in this team,” McCarthy said.
Usuthu are going to clash against neighbours Arrows in a Durban derby at the Sugar Ray Xulu in Clermont on Saturday (15h00).
