Championship-winning coach Manqoba Mngqithi is impressed with the manner in which his Mamelodi Sundowns players acquitted themselves during their 3-1 win over SuperSport United in a DStv Premiership fixture at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Wednesday evening.
This was a very important victory for Sundowns as it gave them their fourth successive league title. The Tshwane giants have collected 60 points from 27 games and are left with three matches before the end of the season.
“I think the game was made to be easier, which was worrying me because when you get a red card so early you make a mistake of thinking the game is going to be easy. But I was happy with the level of professionalism that was shown by our players to try and bury it immediately,” Mngqithi remarked.
Even though the Brazilians won, the former Lamontville Golden Arrows mentor believes that they could have done better during the game.
“We had a lot of good counter pressing. We never gave them time on the ball,” Mngqithi said.
“The boys showed their pedigree. They showed their quality. They could even have done better, to be honest. We did not score as many goals as I thought we could because we created a lot of good opportunities. One is excited that at the end we managed to achieve one of the targets. Now we are left trying to achieve the targets of this cycle. The last three matches are very important to us to make sure our targets are still achieved.”
Meanwhile, Matsatsantsa coach Kaitano Tembo reckons that his boys played well despite losing the game.
“I think this is one game we didn’t deserve to lose. We started very well. Even before they scored we could have been 3-0 up. We had two good chances from the word go,” Tembo said.
“I should give credit to the players. They played very well. We worked very hard without the ball.”
