Controversial coach Stuart Baxter has returned to Kaizer Chiefs for his second stint at the Naturena-based club.
Baxter, who was fired by Indian Super League side Odisha following a rape comment earlier this year, has signed a two-year contract with Amakhosi succeeding sacked Gavin Hunt.
Odisha axed Baxter after he said: “I don’t know when we’re going to get a penalty. I think one of my players would have to rape someone or get raped himself if he was to get a penalty.
The 67-year-old Baxter, who is going to be assisted by Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard, returns to Chiefs with the hope that he will end Amakhosi’s six-season trophy drought.
“We believe we are on track with the changes we have made so far after a challenging season, domestically,” Chiefs chairman Kaizer Motaung said.
“We know his work ethic and believe he will work with the team we have at the moment while trying to rebuild and ensure we have a formidable side for the new season. It’s been six years since Stuart left Chiefs after winning the league trophy in 2015, but he departed on good terms and remained a well-liked figure by many supporters, colleagues and some of the players he coached at the time. We believe he will be able to work within our current set-up and will use the time to understand some of the players he’s not familiar with.”
Baxter won four trophies in the three seasons he spent at Amakhosi. He bagged two trophies in his first season, nothing in his second and two in his third season. Baxter remains the last coach to bring glory to Chiefs.
