The raging COVID-19 pandemic has forced Banyana Banyana to cancel their trip to the Netherlands.
This comes after five Banyana Banyana players tested positive for COVID-19 something which resulted in the entire delegation being placed in isolation. The five players’ names have not been revealed.
Banyana Banyana were scheduled to leave for the Netherlands on Monday. The match was set for Zwolle on Saturday, 3 July.
“This is a difficult time where we are in the middle of the third wave in our country. Due to positive cases in our camp, the full delegation has been put into isolation and we will, therefore, not be able to honour the friendly fixture against the Netherlands. At this moment, of utmost importance is the health of everyone and football takes second place,” Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis said on Monday.
Banyana Banyana were going to use the friendly match to prepare for the CAF African Women’s Cup of Nations qualifiers, which start later this year. On the other hand, the Dutch are preparing for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics in Japan.
