Wayde van Niekerk is the only South African athlete, who is going to take part in the 400-metre semi-finals at the Tokyo Olympics in Japan.  
This is a result of the 29-year-old Van Niekerk from Kraaifontein finishing third in his heat clocking 45.25 seconds early on Sunday morning. 
The world and Olympic record holder is a hopeful for a medal at the Olympic Games having won gold in Rio 2016. 
Meanwhile, Zakithi Nene and Thapelo Phora finished fifth in their respective heats.
