Argentine superstar Lionel Messi has left Spanish La Liga giants Barcelona after negotiations regarding the extension of his contract with the club collapsed.
Marca reported on Thursday evening that the Argentine was leaving Barca after helping the club win numerous trophies. Initially, Messi agreed in principle to sign a five-year deal.
“Despite having reached an agreement between Barca and Leo Messi and with clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, it will not be possible to formalise due to economic and structural obstacles. As as result of this situation, Messi shall not  be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled,” a Barca statement said.
The 34-year-old six-time Ballon d’Or winner has been part of Barcelona since arriving in Spain to join the Catalans when he was only 13 years.
Messi, who led his native Argentina to Copa America glory recently, won 10 league titles, four UEFA Champions League trophies and three Club World Cups with the Catalans.
The Argentine scored 672 goals in 778 appearances he made for Barcelona.
