Simphiwe Konkco is devastated after his fight against Filipino boxer Jonathan Amalcen, which was scheduled for Booysens Boxing Gym on Sunday, was called off on Tuesday.

The tournament where the former world champion was going to face Almacen was cancelled after Uppercut Promotions boss Cyril Lehong failed to secure sponsorship.

“I’m beyond disappointed. I’m hungry for fights and now this happens. This is painful, very painful. To say I’m disappointed is an understatement,” Konkco said on Wednesday.

This is the second time this year that Tsolo-born Konkco’s fight was called off at the eleventh hour. His clash against Hamidu Kwata was cancelled on the eve of the tournament after the Tanzanian came hopelessly overweight in May.

“I really don’t know what to do now. I’m confused. I made sacrifices and spent a lot of money buying supplements while preparing for this fight. I spent money on transport and you know how expensive fuel is,” Konkco said.

The former International Boxing Organisation (IBO) minimumweight champion last fought when he lost to Thai boxer Chayaphon Moonsri in October 2019.
