Ikwekwezi FM and SABC TV sport commentator Tuis Mgidi never thought that his childhood hero Aaron ‘Shadow’ Mbonani would become his colleague one day.
Mbonani, a former Ikwekwezi FM sport commentator, inspired Mgidi to follow a career in the broadcasting industry. And it was a dream come true for Mgidi when they worked together at Ikwekwezi FM.
Mgidi joined Ikwekwezi FM after acing auditions in 2002 and has done very well for himself at SABC Sport. Apart from doing commentary on radio, Mgidi also works as a television commentator.
“Shadow Mbonani is the one who inspired me to follow a career in sport broadcasting. I loved the way he delivered his commentary,” Mgidi said.
Having been on radio for almost two decades, Mgidi who dreams of owning a footbalI team and a radio station, has admitted that he met some challenges in his job and has since overcome some of those.
“The challenge is to work under pressure as stadium conditions are not the same. At some stadiums you find yourself commentating while standing because there’s no monitor to guide you. That needs your full concentration on the game as there are no slow motions. You snooze, you lose,” Mgidi remarked.
“It’s good being a commentator, but you must also have an extra job on the side because you have more spare time you can utilise.”
