Australian George ‘Ferocious’ Kambosos Junior dethroned Teofimo Lopez via a split decision at the Hulu Theatre in Madison Square Garden, New York City, United States, on Sunday morning (South African time).

Two judges had Kambosos Jr winning by 115-111 and 115-112 while the third judge gave the fight to Lopez on 114-113. As a result of the win, Kambosos Jr will return to his Sydney, Australia, home with the World Boxing Association (WBA) ‘Super’, International Boxing Federation (IBF), World Boxing Organisation (WBO), World Boxing Council (WBC) Franchise and The Ring belts.

After being disrespected before the fight, the 28-year-old Kambosos Jr showed Lopez no respect from the first bell. And he showed intent by dropping the American in the first round.

The complexion of the fight changed often even though it was clear on numerous occasions that Kambosos Jr was on top of his game.

Lopez, 24, decked Kambosos Jr in the 10th round, but the Australian, who is unbeaten in 20 bouts, came back stronger in the 11th round and in the end handed the American his first loss in 17 fights.
