Senagal won the Africa Cup of Nations tournament for the first time in history after they beat Egypt 4-2 on penalties at the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde, Cameroon, on Sunday evening.
The match was forced to go to spot kicks following the Teranga Lions and the Pharaohs’ failure to score in two hours of footbalI. This clash wouldn’t have gone to extra time had Sadio Mane’s penalty not been saved by Pharaohs goalkeeper Mohamed Gabal in the seventh minute.
It was third time lucky for the West Africans as they had lost in an AFCON final twice before meeting the Pharaohs. Coach Aliou Cisse’s Teranga Lions lost in the final in 2002 and 2019.
Meanwhile, Mane won the Player of the Tournament award with his teammate Edouard Mendy being voted as the best goalkeeper while Cameroon’s Vincent Aboubakar walked away with the top goalscorer after scoring eight goals.
