Asanda ‘Dynamite’ Gingqi retained his South African featherweight title after he defeated Zolisa Batyi at the East London International Convention Centre (ICC) on Saturday evening.

All three judges nodded saying Gingqi had done enough to retain his title. Lulama Mtya scored it 120-108, Alan Matakane 118-109 and Sithembele Tom 117-110.

Gingqi started very well punching with authority and decked Batyi in the second round. Batyi ‘woke’ up in the fifth round and wobbled Gingqi, forcing him to hold.

Gingqi came back to the fight hitting the target with a straight right, but still Batyi came forward and fought his way out.

It then became an exchange of blows as the two boxers had a go at each other until the final gong.

Meanwhile, Sange Ngoza beat Mhlanganisi Sogcwayi on points to win the vacant Eastern Cape featherweight title.
