Portugal have moved to the second round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals after they defeated Uruguay 2-0 in a group stages match at the Lusail Iconic Stadium in Lusail, Qatar, on Monday evening.

Bruno Fernandes’ cross landed in the back of the net as he broke the deadlock in the 54th minute. Initially, it was thought that Cristiano Ronaldo had headed the ball past Uruguay goalkeeper Sergio Rochet. However, slow motion replays showed that Ronaldo never touched the ball.

Fernandes, who plays for Manchester United in the English Premier League, added his second goal of the match from the penalty spot in referee’s added time.

Match referee Alireza Faghani from Iran awarded Portugal the penalty after Jose Maria Giminez had handled inside the box.
