Senegal’s Teranga Lions have made it to the second round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals after they beat Ecuador 2-1 at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday evening.

The Teranga Lions shot to the lead after Ismaila Sarr netted from the penalty spot in the 44th minute. The Senegalese were awarded a penalty after Sarr was fouled by Piero Hincapie inside the box.

The Teranga Lions lived dangerously at the beginning of he second half as they sat back waiting for the South Americans to come to them. That proved to be a bad decision as Ecuador equalised through Moises Caicedo in the 68th minute.

Two minutes later, Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly restored the African chanpions’ lead and led then to the knockout stages for the first time in 20 years.

Meanwhile, Netherlands ensured that the hosts Qatar bombed out of the tournament without a win or a point as they beat them 2-0 at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor.

Cody Gakpo scored in the 27th minute and Frankie de Jong doubled the score when he netted three minutes into the second half.
