Croatia defeated Japan 3-1 on penalties to move to the quarter-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals at the Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah, Qatar, on Monday evening. 

This last-16 encounter was decided on spot kicks after the two sides had played to a 1-1 draw in 120 minutes of football. 

The Blue Samurai took the lead when Daizen Maeda scored on the stroke of half-time. The Croats equalised through Ivan Perisic’s header after he received a pass from Dejan Lovren in the 55th minute.
