Starline Promotions boss Zandile Malinga has promised to pay former South African heavyweight champion Josh Pretorius after her 18 December tournament was cancelled four days before its actual date.

This follows after Corrie Pretorius, who manages Josh, complained about non-payment as he believes that his son deserved the full R20 000 purse they agreed on.

“I have paid Josh from my own pocket. I have forgiven Zandi Malinga for what she did. She cancelled a tournament a few days before it was due to take place and failed to pay Josh. She didn’t pay the purses into BSA’s account as per the BSA Act of 2001, which says that purses should be deposited 14 days before the tournament. The tournament was cancelled by her, not BSA,” Pretorius said.

Malinga said: “I told Corrie that I had to send the Act to my lawyer. The 14 days on the regulations came about because cheques were bouncing back in the day. Corrie quoted a wrong regulation as the tournament never took place. I owe Josh only 10 percent of the agreed purse.”

Josh from Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal was scheduled to fight against Congolese boxer Didier Nywembwe in an eight rounds bout.

This is the same tournament where Bongani Mahlangu was due to defend his SA junior-featherweight title against Innocent Mantengu and a female junior-bantamweight bout between champion Thema Zuma and Bathabile Ziqubu was also scheduled to take place.
