It’s the end of an era as two-time South African champion Nkululeko ‘The Bulldog’ Mhlongo has retired from professional boxing.

Eshowe-born Mhlongo’s retirement from the fistic sport was announced by his promoter Lebo Mahoko of Dream Team Promotions on Monday evening.

“I wish to announce the retirement of Nkululeko Mhlongo. Nkululeko started his colorful professional boxing career in 2007 at the Baby Champs finals,” Mahoko said.

Mhlongo won the then vacant South African junior-middleweight title when he defeated Page Tshesane in August 2011. He vacated the SA junior-middleweight title in 2018 and went on to win the national middleweight crown in October the following year.

Mhlongo lost the SA middleweight title when he was stopped in the 11th round by current champion John Bopape in Bloemfontein in April last year.
