Asemahle ‘The Predator’ Wellem has revealed that he’s enjoying working with boxing trainer Phumzile ‘Sweet Chocolate’ Matyhila after he walked out of the Brian Mitchell Boxing Academy in Edenvale, Ekurhuleni, where he was trained by Vusi Mtolo.

The Chintsa-born reigning South African super-middleweight champion said that he left the Brian Mitchell Boxing Academy following a disagreement over who should promote his fights and manage him.

Speaking to Ink Sport, Wellem said that he was told to pack up and leave after he refused to terminate his promotional contract with Happy Tewo’s Tewo Promotions and join a rival promotional outfit.

“I left the Brian Mitchell Boxing Academy after I was asked to leave following my refusal to terminate my promotional contract with Tewo Promotions and my management contract with Siya Zingelwa,” Wellem revealed.

Wellem, who won the SA super-middleweight title in his fourth professional fight when he stopped previously unbeaten Cowin Ray in Pretoria last October, teamed up with Matyhila, a former SA bantamweight champion, immediately after leaving Mtolo.

“I’m now trained by Phumzile Matyhila in Norwood and I’m really enjoying myself working under him,” the unbeaten Wellem said.

Wellem, who has won all his five fights with three of them being stoppages, is yet to defend his national title. Ink Sport has it on good authority that there was a proposed fight between Wellem and Tristan Truter, which would have been scheduled for Saturday, 13 May.  However, there were no prospects of the fight materialising because Truter is busy with his studies.
