Embattled Boxing South Africa (BSA) provincial manager in the Eastern Cape Phakamile Jacobs is going to be hauled before a disciplinary committee for bringing the fistic sport into disrepute, Ink Sport has gathered.
Ink Sport can reveal that an urgent BSA board meeting held on Thursday, which was called after it was discovered that Jacobs had incorrectly tallied score cards after the South African female bantamweight title contest between Melissa Miller and Sharadene Fortuin at the East London International Convention Centre (ICC) last Sunday, recommended that the Mdantsane-based administrator be hauled over the coals.
Miller was announced as the winner by a split decision after judges Lulama Mtya and Thandi Ngodwana had her winning by 95-94 and 97-93 respectively with Allen Matakane giving the duel to Fortuin (96-94).
However, Miller’s joy of having reclaimed the title, which she lost to Fortuin in August 2021, was short-lived as she was told on Wednesday that Sunday’s fight was actually a draw.
Ink Sport can confirm that Jacobs will appear before a DC even though acting BSA chief executive officer Erick Nsikayezwe Sithole said he still has to meet the managers of Miller and Fortuin.
“There’s a resolution. We will only communicate what’s going to happen once we have met the two boxers’ managers,” Sithole said on Friday.
Our source said: “Something is going to happen to Mr Jacobs. He’s going to appear before a disciplinary committee where the intension is to make sure that he takes his job seriously.”
Meanwhile, Jacobs received a backlash in March last year after Phumelela Cafu was announced as the winner of his flyweight title fight against current champion Jackson Chauke even though the clash was clearly a draw.
Duncan Village’s Cafu had won on only one score card while the other two score cards had the fight as a draw.
