While the National Professional Boxing Promoters Association (NPBPA) is still fighting in the courts of law, Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Zizi Kodwa, announced the appointment of Mandla Ntlanganiso as the accounting authority for Boxing South Africa (BSA), effective from Saturday, 24 February.

The NPBPA successfully interdicted the installation of the new BSA board in December last year citing lack of consultation from Kodwa. The interdicted board comprised of Sifiso Shongwe, Luxolo September, Sakhiwe Sodo, Romy Titus, Princess Mangoma, Nande Mheshe and Dr Mary-Gene Manthata-Setati.

And according to a statement from the Ministry of Sport, Ntlanganiso’s appointment was made in line with the provisions of National Treasury, in terms of Section 49(2) of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA).

The section states that if a public entity: (a) has a board or other controlling body, that board or controlling body is the accounting authority for that entity; or (b) does not have a controlling body, the chief executive officer, or the other person in charge of the public entity is the accounting authority for that public entity unless specific legislation applicable to that public entity designates another person as the accounting authority.

“The appointment of Mr Mandla Ntlanganiso as Boxing South Africa’s accounting authority provides clarity to all stakeholders and assurance to all promoters and boxers that all sanctioned boxing fights will go ahead as planned,” Kodwa said.

“I endeavour unremittingly to ensure that all legal matters before the Ministry and Boxing South Africa are resolved as a matter of urgency. The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture is working around the clock to restore good corporate governance at Boxing South Africa.

“My gratitude goes to Mr Mandla Ntlanganiso for holding the fort as Boxing South Africa acting chief executive officer. I congratulate Mr Ntlanganiso and wish him well in his new appointment. He can certainly count on my guidance and the department’s support.”

Ntlanganiso joined BSA as director of operations in January 2022 and had been acting chief executive officer since December last year.

  1. All we need is boxers to have fights/ being active not BSA and Promoters fighting each other.
