Minister of Sport Zizi Kodwa and Boxing South Africa (BSA) accounting authority Mandla Ntlanganiso have filed answering affidavits in the case brought against them by the National Professional Boxing Promoters Association (NPBPA).

Kodwa is defending himself following the challenge brought by the NPBPA against Ntlanganiso’s appointment as BSA accounting authority last month.

“The applicant is not in good standing with the third respondent (BSA) because it owes approximately R3 000 000,00 in respect of fees and payable to BSA. I deny that the applicant’s challenge is in the best interest of the boxing community,” Kodwa said in his answering affidavit.

“The application is self-evidently, self-serving and only promotes narrow interests of the applicant. Other s28 entities appear not to support the application.”

In his answering affidavit, Ntlanganiso revealed that he was properly appointed and that the NPBPA had failed to meet its obligation in order for it to be recognised by BSA.

“The applicant’s enjoyment of recognition by Boxing South Africa was never subject to it being congratulated for anything by Boxing South Africa. It was subject to it by submitting its constitution to Boxing South Africa for approval in writing. And, from then onwards, submitting annual reports. It did neither,” Ntlanganiso.

“During the financial years 2022/23 and 2023/24 the applicant did not submit any annual reports to Boxing South Africa. In sum, I contend that the applicant, in law, has not made a case for recognition.”

Ntlanganiso added: “On 12 December 2023, I was appointed acting chief executive officer of Boxing South Africa. I was properly appointed to act as chief executive officer by a board of directors of Boxing South Africa. That the board of Boxing South Africa was subsequently interdicted takes nothing away from my appointment. If the applicant had its way, there would be a boxing blackout in the Republic of South Africa.”

Meanwhile, the matter is scheduled to be heard at the High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday next week.
