Khangelani Jack is unhappy with how his boxer Zolisa Batyi acquitted himself during his South African featherweight title defence against Lucky Hobyane at the Orient Theatre in East London on Sunday evening.

Jack, the 2023 Trainer of the Year award winner, is, however, happy that they retained the title when Batyi stopped Hobyane in the eighth round.

Batyi from Eluxolweni, Nxarhuni, successfully defended his title after fight referee Allen Matakane stopped the proceedings in two minutes and 58 seconds.

“I’m not happy with our performance. I didn’t like it at all. However, I accept the win under the circumstances and challenges we encountered while preparing for the fight in the last two weeks,” Jack said.

“I’m very happy that we managed to retain the title. I fully understand why he performed that way. We will go back to the gym.”

This was Batyi’s second title defence since he dethroned former champion Jeff Magagane at the Ngoako Ramatlhodi Sports Complex in Seshego, Polokwane, in December 2022.
