Boxing South Africa (BSA) has congratulated Mdantsane boxer Siyakholwa Kuse after he won the World Boxing Council (WBC) Boxer of the Month award for May.

Kuse bagged the award following his capture of the WBC minimumweight title after he outpointed Filipino opponent Melvin Jerusalem at the Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, last month.

In a statement on Thursday, BSA said: “Boxing South Africa (BSA) extends its heartfelt congratulations to rising star Siyakholwa Kuse for being named the World Boxing Council (WBC) Boxer of the May Month, a prestigious international recognition that speaks volumes about his talent, discipline and fighting spirit.”

The statement added: “This well-deserved accolade places Kuse among an elite group of global fighters and re-affirms that South Africa remains a fertile ground for world class boxing talent. To be singled out by the WBC, one of the sport’s most respected sanctioning bodies, is no small feat. It is a testament to Kuse’s relentless dedication in the gym, his courage in the ring and the quiet dignity with which he carries himself as both an athlete and an ambassador of the sport.”

The 27-year-old Kuse, a former SA and African Boxing Union (ABU) minimumweight titlist, made history by becoming the first boxer from the Eastern Cape to become a WBC champion.

“On behalf of the entire boxing fraternity, we say Siyakholwa, you have made the nation proud. Your achievement shines a well-deserved spotlight on South African boxing and serves as an inspiration to every young fighter, who dreams of wearing a championship belt. May this honour fuel your journey to even greater heights. Keep punching, keep believing and know that Boxing SA stands firmly behind you,” the statement concluded.

Meanwhile, Kuse received a cheque of R100 000 from Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCCM) executive mayor Prince Faku on Thursday afternoon.
