Having lost once since making his professional debut in May 2023, Charlton ‘Baby Pain’ Malajika is chasing his straight 10th win as he prepares to fly out of South Africa for Zambia later this week.
Malajika has a date with Zambian boxer David ‘Sniper’ Mwale at the Government Complex in Lusaka this coming Saturday. At stake, it’s going to be the unbeaten Mwale’s World Boxing Council (WBC) International bantamweight title.
This slugfest was due to have taken place in December last year, but had to be postponed after Malajika tore knee ligaments while he was preparing to face the Zambian.
“Charlton’s preparations have gone on very well. I’m very happy with him. He’s looking good. This is a big fight and it’s all systems go now,” Malajika’s trainer Manny Fernandes said.
Malajika, who is the younger brother to WBC junior-bantamweight title contender Ricardo Malajika, has not fought since he stopped Filipino opponent Froilan Saludar in the fourth round last October. Before that, Malajika won the International Boxing Organisation (IBO) Youth bantamweight title after he outpointed RV Deniega from the Philippines in July.
Malajika goes to the Mwale fight carrying a professional record of nine wins with four stoppages and a single loss.
On the other hand, Mwale, who us a southpaw from the capital Lusaka, has won all his 13 fights with seven of those wins coming from knockouts. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
