The Proteas, who will resume on 101 for two on day four of the third and final Test against India at Newlands in Cape Town on Friday morning, only need 111 in two days to win the series.
At stumps on Thursday evening, the Proteas had lost two wickets – Dean Elgar on 30 and Aiden Markram on 16 while Keegan Petersen was unbeaten on 48.
The Proteas were set 212 runs to win the match and the series after India were bowled out for 198 with Rishabh Pant knocking an unbeaten 100.
Marco Jansen took four wickets for 36 while Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi claimed three wickets each for 53 and 21 respectively.
