Former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Johan Neeskens has passed away, the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) said on Monday.

The Dutchman, who passed away on Sunday aged 73, was fired by Sundowns and replaced by Pitso Mosimane in December 2012 following a string of poor results.

Neeskens was considered to be one of the greatest midfielders having won major trophies with Ajax Amsterdam and Barcelona.

He played 49 times in the Dutch national team and was also in the Netherlands squad, which reached the FIFA World Cup final twice in 1974 and 1978. He was Dutch assistant coach between 1995 and 2000.
