Newly-crowned world champion Phumelela ‘The Truth’ Cafu has forced his way into the Ring Magazine top four ratings following his win over Japanese boxer Kosei Tanaka in Tokyo, Japan, on Monday.
As a result of his split decision victory against Tanaka, Cafu from Duncan Village in East London became the new World Boxing Organisation (WBO) junior-bantamweight champion.
Cafu is rated fourth behind third placed Kazuto Iota from Japan, Mexican Juan Francisco Estrada at number two and Argentine Fernando Martinez, who is the reigning World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) champion.
Meanwhile, it was the first time that Cafu, a former South African junior-bantamweight titlist, fought outside South Africa since he made his professional debut with a technical knockout win over Phumelelo Maqolo in 2018.
And following his impressive performance on Monday, Cafu was rewarded with a promotional contract, which he signed with top Japanese promoter Akihiko Honda of Teiken Promotions.
