Shervantaigh Koopman survived a first round scare and stopped Canadian boxer Brandon Cook in the fifth round to win the vacant World Boxing Association (WBA) Intercontinental junior-middleweight title at a GoldenGloves tournament at the Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, on Saturday evening.

Koopman came back to the fight after he was decked twice in the first round and he dropped the Canadian in the same round.

The 30-year-old Koopman dropped Cook again in the third and fifth round something which forced the fight referee to halt the proceedings. 

Meanwhile, it was third time lucky for Brandon Thysse as he stopped Nkhensahosi Makondo in the eighth round to win the vacant SA junior-middleweight title. 

On the other hand, Ntethelelo Nkosi successfully defended his SA junior-welterweight title with a first round knockout win over Sanele Msimang in a bout, which pitted KwaZulu-Natal boxers against each other.
